A longtime collaborator with Vintage Noise, David Boyden brings a fire and flair to the ensemble that recalls the legendary pairing of Nat King Cole and Stuff Smith. His violin isn’t just an accent—it’s a voice, weaving through the music with an energy that is both playful and deeply expressive. Whether trading licks with Michael Carter on a swinging standard or adding a touch of gypsy jazz charm, David’s playing gives Vintage Noise a sound unlike any other, bridging the past and present with a style that feels both timeless and electric.
Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, David’s musical foundation is as deep as his improvisational spirit. Trained at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts and later earning his BM in violin performance from San Francisco State University, he honed his craft under some of the region’s most respected mentors. His broad-ranging experience spans jazz, classical, swing, Scandinavian folk music, and improvisation, making him a sought-after performer with groups like Kaptain Bottletop, The Pine Needles, and the 29th Street Swingtet.
David’s impact on Vintage Noise is undeniable. His violin lines don’t just complement the melodies—they dance through them, bringing the same kind of electricity that made Cole and Stuff Smith’s collaborations so legendary. Though his time with the band has slowed, his presence is still deeply felt in every note, a reminder that jazz is at its best when it swings, surprises, and sings with soul.
